The Mr Price JumpStart programme is a youth skills development initiative run by the Mr Price Foundation to equip unemployed South Africans for careers in the retail and manufacturing sectors. The program provides training, work experience, and life skills to make young people more employable.

Who is eligible to apply?

To apply for JumpStart’s core programmes, you must meet these general criteria: 

  • Be a South African citizen.
  • Have a Grade 12/Matric certificate.
  • Be between 18 and 33 years old.
  • Be currently unemployed.
  • Have no criminal record. 

What programmes are available?

JumpStart offers several training programmes, including: 

  • Retail Frontline Programme (RFP): A two-week course for entry-level positions in retail, including an online life skills course and one week of practical, in-store work experience.
  • Retail Essentials Programme (REP): A six-month internship for more specialised retail roles. It combines theoretical learning with in-store work experience.
  • Retail Sales Programme (RSP): A two-week training experience for customer-facing retail sales positions, including life skills, sales theory, and in-store experience.
  • Professional Retail Programme (PRP): A nine-month graduate internship designed to build skills for junior positions in buying, planning, and store management.
  • Professional Manufacturing Programme (PMP): A nine-month practical and theoretical course for graduates interested in roles like pattern-making, costing, and production.
  • Warehousing Basics: A short course that includes online and in-person training, plus one week of hands-on experience in a warehouse setting.

Applications must be completed online, but the process may vary depending on the specific programme: 

  1. Visit the official Mr Price Foundation website at mrpricefoundation.org.
  2. Navigate to the “JumpStart” section.
  3. Fill out the application form on the relevant programme page.
  4. If applications are open for a particular programme in your area, you may be contacted to complete online assessments.

Is a job guaranteed?

The programme does not guarantee a job at the end of the training. However, JumpStart significantly boosts your employability by providing you with valuable skills, experience, and certifications. It also has a strong network of employer partners, including the Mr Price Group and SPAR, and helps connect suitable candidates to job opportunities.
