
How to Apply for NSFAS: Step-by-Step
Follow these simple steps to apply for NSFAS funding:
🟢 STEP 1: Check If You Qualify
You must:
- Be a South African citizen
- Have a valid South African ID
- Be applying to or studying at a public university or TVET college
- Come from a household income of:
- R350 000 or less per year, or
- R600 000 or less (for students living with disabilities)
🟢 STEP 2: Prepare Your Documents
Upload clear copies of:
- Your South African ID
- Parents’/guardian’s ID (or death certificate if deceased)
- Proof of household income
(payslip, affidavit if unemployed, or SASSA letter) - Latest academic results (Matric or tertiary)
- NSFAS consent form (download from NSFAS site)
🟢 STEP 3: Create a myNSFAS Account
- Visit www.nsfas.org.za
- Click myNSFAS
- Select Register
- Enter your ID number and personal details
- Create a username & password
- Verify your account via SMS or email
🟢 STEP 4: Complete the Application
- Log in to myNSFAS
- Click Apply
- Fill in all personal, academic & household details
- Upload required documents
- Accept terms and conditions
🟢 STEP 5: Submit Application
- Review all information
- Click Submit
- Save your reference number
🟢 STEP 6: Track Your Application
- Log in regularly to myNSFAS
- Check your application status
- Upload additional documents if requested
🟢 STEP 7: Wait for Results
Your status may show:
- Application Submitted
- Provisionally Funded
- Approved
- Unsuccessful
If approved, NSFAS pays your institution directly.
