How to apply for a smart ID card

1. Go to the Online Application Website

Visit the official website of the Department of Home Affairs:

Create an account and start your application online.


2. Fill in the Application Form

Complete the Smart ID Card application form with your personal details:

  • Full names
  • ID number (if replacing)
  • Address
  • Contact details

3. Upload Required Documents

You may need to provide:

  • Your birth certificate (if applying for the first time)
  • Old ID book (if replacing)
  • Proof of residence

4. Pay the Application Fee

  • First Smart ID Card: Free
  • Replacement ID Card: About R140

5. Book an Appointment

Choose a date to visit a Home Affairs office or bank branch to:

  • Take fingerprints
  • Take your photo
  • Confirm your details

Some banks that assist with Smart ID applications include:

  • Standard Bank
  • ABSA
  • First National Bank
  • Nedbank

6. Visit the Office or Bank

Bring your documents and complete biometrics (photo & fingerprints).


7. Collect Your Smart ID Card

You will receive an SMS when your ID is ready.
Usually it takes 7โ€“14 working days.
