Position: Electrician (Surface Risk)
Job Grade: C Lower
Department: Metallurgical Plant
Location: South Deep Gold Mine
Role Overview
The Electrician will be responsible for maintenance, repairs, and project work on electrical systems, plant, and equipment within the Metallurgical Plant.
This includes executing planned and unplanned tasks to ensure equipment operates safely, efficiently, and effectively, while maintaining the highest safety standards at all times.
Minimum Requirements
- Grade 12 (or equivalent)
- Electrical Trade Certificate
- Medium Voltage (MV) Certificate
- 2–5 years’ experience as an MV Electrician in a metallurgical plant environment
- Valid driver’s licence
- Must be declared medically fit through a risk-based medical exam at the Gold Fields Occupational Health Centre, including Heat Tolerance Screening and any additional required tests

Key Competencies
- Strong safety leadership and proven safety campaign involvement
- Effective team leadership and collaboration skills
- Clear spoken and written English communication
- Self-motivated, proactive, and able to work independently
- Solid knowledge of metallurgical plant maintenance
- Experience with soft starters and Variable Speed Drives
- Proven fault-finding, diagnostics, maintenance, and legal inspections of equipment
Duties and Responsibilities
- Ensure health and safety compliance for yourself and your team
- Promote a Zero Harm safety culture through adherence to legislation, standards, and safety initiatives
- Build positive team relationships while maintaining discipline
- Perform equipment condition monitoring and planned maintenance
- Conduct repairs, maintenance, and installations on:
- MCCs and MV substations
- Crushers and conveyors
- MV overhead lines, boilers, and motors
- New equipment and general plant maintenance
- Respond to breakdowns, perform diagnostics, and complete root-cause analysis
- Be available for shift work, overtime, and standby duties when required
