How to Apply to University (Step by Step)
1️⃣ Choose What You Want to Study
First decide:
• What course you want (e.g. Teaching, Nursing, Law, IT)
• Which universities offer that course
👉 Make sure you meet the minimum requirements (subjects & marks).
2️⃣ Check the Entry Requirements
Each course has requirements like:
• Specific subjects (Maths, Science, English)
• Minimum APS / points

• Prospectuses
• Career guidance platforms
3️⃣ Apply Online
Most universities use online applications.
You will need:
✔ South African ID
✔ Latest school results (Grade 11 or Grade 12)
✔ Email address
✔ Phone number

4️⃣ Pay the Application Fee (If Required)
Some universities charge a small fee (R100–R300).
Others are free.
💡 If you can’t afford it, check if:
• The university offers free applications
• NSFAS covers the fee
5️⃣ Track Your Application
After applying:
• Log in regularly
• Check your email & SMS
• Upload documents if requested
Status may show:
• Pending
• Provisionally accepted
• Accepted
• Rejected
6️⃣ Accept the Offer
If accepted:
👉 Log in
👉 Accept the offer before the deadline
If you don’t accept, the offer can be given to someone else.
7️⃣ Apply for NSFAS (If You Need Funding)
If you can’t afford fees:
👉 Apply for NSFAS online
NSFAS can pay for:
• Tuition
• Accommodation
• Food
• Transport
• Study materials
📌 NSFAS is separate from university application – you must apply for both.
8️⃣ Register at the University
After acceptance:
• The university will give registration dates
• You register online or on campus
• Classes then start
